The Best Stoner Halloween Movies to Watch Tonight
by Sessions By The Bay 4 min read

Not everybody is out in costume tonight. If you are staying in once the doorbell stops ringing, here is a lineup of horror comedies made for a slow night on the couch. Every pick is rated R or was released unrated, so this is a grown-ups' list. Pick a movie, roll something up, and get comfortable.
Start with the Wayans
Scary Movie (2000) and Scary Movie 2 (2001). Keenen Ivory Wayans directed both, and Shawn and Marlon Wayans co-wrote and star. Marlon plays Shorty, who stays high for the entire movie. He has said Shorty was based on a real friend of his, which tells you everything.
Scary Movie (2026). Marlon and Shawn came back to write the new one, which hit theaters in June. If you missed it this summer, tonight is the night.
A Haunted House (2013). Marlon Wayans takes apart Paranormal Activity, one creaky door at a time.
The stoner hall of fame
Idle Hands (1999). Anton is a world-class couch surfer until his hand gets possessed and starts doing terrible things on its own. His two buddies come back as wisecracking zombies, and the whole thing ends at a Halloween dance with The Offspring on stage.
The Cabin in the Woods (2012). Five friends, one cabin, and a horror plot that is not what it looks like. Marty, the stoner of the group, turns out to be the smartest person in the movie. His coffee mug folds out into a working bong.
This Is the End (2013). Seth Rogen, James Franco and friends play themselves, stuck in Franco's house while the world ends outside. Watch for the homemade sequel to Pineapple Express they shoot to pass the time.
Leprechaun in the Hood (2000). Ice-T versus Warwick Davis's Leprechaun, and the crew wins with joints rolled with four-leaf clover. It is exactly as ridiculous as it sounds.
Horror comedies that just work
Shaun of the Dead (2004). A London slacker and his very relaxed best friend Ed try to wait out a zombie outbreak. The fight set to Queen's "Don't Stop Me Now" is worth the whole movie.
Tucker & Dale vs. Evil (2010). Two sweet guys on a fishing vacation get mistaken for killers by a group of college students. Every misunderstanding gets worse, and funnier.
What We Do in the Shadows (2014). A fake documentary about four vampire roommates in New Zealand, from Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi. Listen for the werewolf leader's rule: "We're werewolves, not swearwolves."
Evil Dead II (1987). Released unrated, and still the gold standard. Ash fights his own possessed hand, cuts it off and fits a chainsaw in its place. Groovy.
One deep cut
Seven Cemeteries (2024). Danny Trejo plays a parolee who has a witch, La Bruja, raise his old crew from the dead to defend a ranch from a drug lord. Released unrated, loud, and a lot of fun.
